Who We Work With—Is This You?

You work in business or law. You’re a manager—or aspire to be one. You understand that your appearance and behavior play a significant role in your success. You want the confidence of knowing that you look appropriate and powerful, and that your manners are impeccable. You’re willing to invest in that goal.

How Do You Want to be Perceived?

We start with your inherent look—the way you look without makeup or styled hair—and work with your personal design elements to create the effect you want while still letting you “look like yourself.”

If your inherent look is soft and gentle, is that okay with you? Or would you sometimes like to appear stronger and more authoritative? Or more high-energy?

If your inherent impression is dynamic and intimidating, do you always want to look that way? Or would you sometimes like to seem friendly and approachable? Or romantic?

Depending on your natural attributes, the methods used to achieve a particular effect will vary. This is why generic advice in books or magazines is seldom helpful. What works well for one person may be quite jarring on another.

“Just be yourself.” Excellent advice—but I’d change it to: “Just be inherent—and modify strategically to create the effect you choose.”

Your company has spent thousands of dollars on its business identity, website design, and office location and décor to convey the impression that it is reliable, trustworthy, professional, and a valuable ally to clients. However, some of your employees’ attire or overall appearance sends the message “sloppy and careless” or “sexy, available, ready to party”—anything but businesslike. You not only risk alienating clients, but you’ve had complaints from other staff members.

You enjoy the relatively casual atmosphere of your office, but you often travel for business to cities where business dress is more traditional. You want your everyday relaxed appearance to look polished, and you want a business travel wardrobe that works in a more sophisticated business environment.

You manage people who are good at their jobs and relate well to clients, but you shudder at the prospect of them taking a client to lunch or attending an industry business dinner.  Because the worst breach of etiquette is commenting on another person’s manners, you know no one will say anything to your employee about his/her lapses or faux pas—but you know what they’re thinking. And it doesn’t reflect well on your company.

You’re an attorney whose clients have to appear in court or at settlement conferences. You know that your appearance and your client’s or witness’s appearance can influence the perception of other parties, including an arbitrator or a jury. You’d like to have a way to create specific psychological effects (power, vulnerability, competence, credibility, etc.) as needed.

"Working with Bernie has given me confidence in making a career change. She has a great eye for style and pulling together outfits that work well interchangeably. I went from working in a mill office to a professional office where the dress code is much dressier, and have received compliments from my new supervisor saying that she loves my clothes and accessories."
